At the beginning of the film, an elderly man is attacked and carried off by a very fast, invisible creature. Finn, just arrived, is the new district ranger in the small town of Beaverfield and moves into the Beaverfield Inn Hotel. On his first day on the job, he meets a few of the townspeople who welcome him warmly, while the mailwoman Cecily tells him the latest gossip and about the proposed oil pipeline in the town that is causing discussion.
Most of the townspeople gather at the hotel, first suspecting Emerson Flint, who lives on the outskirts of town, wants nothing to do with the residents, and is a cranky man. Finn and Cecily question Flint in his house, on the mantelpiece they discover the collar of the little dog, while Dr. Ellis, a resident of the hotel, analyzes a hair she found on the body, which turns out to be werewolf hair. That night, a guest is attacked by the beast in the hotel, but it is able to be scared away, though the guest is shot and loses a few fingers.
Dr. Ellis concludes that a resident of the hotel is responsible for the attacks, who turns into a werewolf, whereupon she commits suicide, apparently out of fear. The rest of the residents accuse each other and are on the verge of shooting at each other, but Finn is able to calm them down and they decide to put away all the weapons and deposit them in a safe room. However, some of the townspeople only seem to have calmed down and start killing each other.
